Abstract
This chapter discusses a brief history of incisional hernia from the first century A.D. to today’s current practices. The epidemiology, cost, and prevalence of incisional hernia repair, especially in the USA, are highlighted according to the most currently available data.
The modifiable risks factors for the development of incisional hernia after any violation of the abdominal wall are discussed, including infection, obesity, smoking, malnourishment, and poorly controlled diabetes. Furthermore, the use of mesh is now considered the standard for incisional hernia repair of larger defects, and the chapter reviews the most validated data for the use of mesh.
