Part of the book series: Success in Academic Surgery ((SIAS))

Abstract

This chapter gives perspective on a career in academic surgery and some of the reasons a student would consider such a career. Surgery itself has many rewards, regardless of the setting in which one practices. The privilege of taking care of patients, the trust people have in allowing us to operate on them and the close bonds we form with patients and their families are some of the intangible rewards to a surgical career. We really do make a difference in people’s lives. While this chapter is focused on why one might consider a career in academic surgery, I would hope that much of it is relevant to anyone considering a surgical career.
