The California Current Upwelling System

  • Chapter
  • First Online:
Upwelling Systems of the World

Abstract

In this chapter, we discuss the California Current upwelling system along the west coast of North America, from its southern point in Baja California to where it meets the cyclonic gyre in the Gulf of Alaska. The southern part of the system is very well studied, thanks to the CALCOFI program that has been ongoing since 1949, but new research results during the past decade have changed our views of the way the system operates considerably.
