Abstract

Fibroids are benign tumors of the uterus causing excessive bleeding which have hitherto been subjected to surgical excision called myectomy. When unresectable, hysterectomy has been performed as a definitive therapy. An alternative minimally invasive procedure which is increasingly preferred as the treatment of choice is uterine artery embolization. A thorough knowledge of the vascular anatomy and technical expertise is required for successful embolization. The technical pitfalls require careful consideration to prevent procedural complications. This procedure has been safely applied even to large fibroids with successful results and minimal complications. Recurrence rates are low with restoration of blood flow to the uterus through collaterals from the ovarian and epigastric arteries. This procedure has also been tried with success to prevent post-partum bleeding after delivery with no maternal or fetal complications.
