Abstract

The bilateral parotid glands are the largest saliva producing structures of the orofacial region. Several important anatomical structures course through the parotid glands, i.e., the facial nerve (CN VII), the external carotid artery, and the retromandibular vein. For the dental practitioner, knowledge of the anatomical aspects of the parotid glands is helpful for the differentiation of retromandibular swellings and for the interpretation of facial paralysis related to CN VII.
