Clinical Oral Anatomy

Abstract

The mandibular canal is a prominent bony channel within the posterior body of the mandible carrying the inferior alveolar artery, vein, and nerve. Since many dental interventions are performed in the vicinity of the mandibular canal, this structure must be spared whenever possible to avoid neural and vascular complications. Therefore, knowledge of the exact location and of the course of the mandibular canal relative to adjacent roots or bone surfaces is key in clinical dentistry. 3D imaging has contributed considerably to the topographical knowledge of the mandibular canal.
