Abstract
An essential pre-condition of cross-class romance is the emergence and diffusion of romantic love as a basis for marriage. An historical account covers the development of romantic love in England and North America in the eighteenth century and its diffusion across the class spectrum in the USA in the nineteenth century and early twentieth century.
