Abstract

This conclusion uses a close reading of Jeffrey Eugenides’ The Virgin Suicides to examine the role of fear in the myths that drive the modern suburbia. Drawing from Roberto Esposito’s concept of immunity and community, the conclusion reasserts that Eugenides’ novel, like many of the other fictions studied in the book, imagines a more contingent community in suburbia, one more germane to the era of global late capitalism.
