Election Debates: The Less Than Smooth Path to TV’s Big Campaign Events

Abstract

Ric Bailey provides considerable insights into how the 2015 leader debates came about only after intensive discussions involving the broadcasters and the rival political parties. Although the historic first ever encounters between prospective prime ministers in 2010 had been a success in terms of ratings representatives acting on behalf of incumbent David Cameron appeared more reluctant to allow his participation this time. Negotiations were further complicated by the eventual inclusion of four more leaders after the initial proposals to limit the number of participants were abandoned in favour of a more varied format. The chapter considers these developments as well as the protracted debates between representatives from the rival parties and media organisations as to their preferred options for the debates.
