Abstract

Kevin Pringle provides insight into the strategy pursued by his Party which, alongside the Conservatives, was one of the two undoubted winners of the General Election. He charts the emergence of the SNP as an electoral force and how success at Holyrood paved the way for a significant breakthrough at Westminster that finally came in 2015. This advance followed the previous autumn’s Independence Referendum, a campaign that the Party an ideal opportunity to promote its case and rapidly recruit more members. By the time of the subsequent General Election the SNP was well placed to turn Labour and Conservative criticisms of its influence to its own advantage by demonstrating how the Party would be a strong voice for Scotland.
