Abstract

Recently, the interest for brachytherapy in prostate cancer increased due to the fact that about four out of five prostate cancers are found in an early stage and to the development of new technologies for improving seeds implant. Moreover, the new technologies have significantly improved treatment accuracy, efficiency and outcomes in brachytherapy. Here, we will discuss the recent acquisitions in terms of technologies, instrumentations and procedures in brachytherapy. Moreover, the oncological, functional and quality of life-related results will be discussed, with attention on the lack of randomised clinical trials. However, based on the analysis of all reported experiences, the European Association of Urology suggested that the use of brachytherapy should be limited to patients with cT1-T2a, Gleason score <7 (or 3 + 4), PSA <10 ng/mL, prostate volume <50 mL, without a previous TURP and with a good IPSS.
