Adolescent Health in Cuba

Abstract

Adolescence is a key phase of human development in which rapid biological and psychological changes that affect every aspect of the adolescent’s life. At this stage, people are relatively healthy, but we must not forget that investing in the health of young people is essential to protect investments in children and to ensure the health of the future adult population. Notwithstanding that, some of our most harmful habits (which manifest themselves as health problems during adulthood) are acquired during adolescence and youth. The health of Cuban adolescents is characterized by low rates of mortality, morbidity, and disability. There is a positive secular trend in physical development. Adolescents are using less tobacco products and alcohol than in previous years. The fertility rate for adolescents has declined, as well as other indicators related to early reproductive processes. There has also been a decline in early marriage. However, it is necessary to continue working on reducing teen pregnancy, the prevalence of overweight and adiposity and chronic diseases and in developing campaigns to preserve sexual and reproductive health of this population. This purpose is feasible thanks to the universal and free access of the adolescents in Cuba to all health services and education and to the features of the National Health System.
