Abstract

In this final chapter, the author compares the research findings regarding the Netherlands and Norway. She concludes that the dominant representations of Muslim women and Islam in public discourse strongly feed into the self-representations of the women studied. Moreover, the dynamics between stereotyping and self-representation influenced the organisations’ goals and activities. Women’s self-representations also affected dominant discourse about women with a Muslim background and Islam, albeit to a limited extent. Last but not least, the author discusses how this book contributes to the scholarly understanding of citizenship as experience and practice.
