Abstract
This chapter reviews recent efforts to develop and utilize recovery and resilience-oriented activities in inpatient behavioral health settings. The impact of stress and trauma can be debilitating and lead to repeated hospitalizations, but it can be overcome. Community-based psychiatric rehabilitation practices have emerged over the past few decades as a preferred approach to assisting individuals with a serious mental illness avoid hospitalization and recover and improve their overall wellness after leaving inpatient settings. Technologies focus on assisting individuals to develop and maintain new skills to cope with the effects of mental illness and to integrate into the local community, ultimately becoming contributing members of society. Building resilience is the long-term process enhancing one’s abilities to adjust to daily challenges and is essential to succeed and achieve a healthy lifestyle. The rationale for incorporating recovery/resilience into inpatient settings is presented as are several specific practices available for use in various inpatient settings.
