Abstract
There was a long-term concerted program to prepare for extensive EVA activities while assembling a space station but these were primarily in the form of studies, simulations, and the definition of requirements. As the start of ISS assembly loomed, NASA figured some hands-on experience in space was necessary.
What we’re doing is we’re really learning to take spacewalks from a special, rare feat into a production mode…[to] get the station built. It’s a large task, but they’re already planning out how to do it. I think [we] will certainly be able to do the job.

Notes
- 1.
Even with this new facility, training for EVAs to assemble Space Station Freedom would have been challenging with its originally conceived structure.
