Abstract
The chapter highlights the concept of urban fringe, forces responsible for development and growth of urban fringe. This zone is characterized by the presence of both rural and urban elements. The chapter draws examples from both developed world and developing countries to showcase the diversity of urban fringe. The urban fringe is a social, economic and environmental space where three systems (agricultural, urban and the natural) interact.
