At the Size Limit - Effects of Miniaturization in Insects

Abstract

The history of studies of the structure of Corylophidae (Coleoptera) is briefly reviewed. The external and internal morphology of adults and larvae of corylophids are described in detail. It is shown that in spite of their minute size the structure of corylophids is not strongly simplified. The main peculiar morphological features of corylophids are the following: reduction of the number of pronounced skeletal elements and simplified exoskeleton in larvae, absence of muscles of midgut, simplified tracheal system, oligomerization and condensation of ganglia, strong asymmetry of central nervous system first instar larvae, complete shift of head ganglia into the thorax in adults, and absence of several muscles.
