Medullary Thyroid Cancer

Abstract

Medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) is a rare form of thyroid carcinoma. The hereditary nature and central role for surgical management has been reviewed in other chapters of this text. The data which guide the use of external beam radiotherapy in MTC is largely based on institutional series due to the rarity of MTC. Surgical resection is the primary management modality and there is no role for 131Iodine as a form of radiotherapy. This chapter will review the role of EBRT in improving locoregional control in patient with MTC and will review the radiotherapy techniques used in modern management, namely intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT).
