Abstract

Headache is a common presenting symptom during pregnancy. Most headaches are benign. Women with preexisting headache disorders such as migraine may experience a transient worsening most likely during the first trimester. More ominous presentations, such as an AVM, venous thrombosis, or idiopathic intracranial hypertension, may be seen. The obstetrician must be aware of changing descriptions of a typical prepregnant headache and should recognize when to seek neurologic consultation. In this chapter, three case examples illustrate presentation and management of concerning headaches that present during pregnancy.
