Abstract
General position, role and directions for use of ratings in various areas are presented. The chapter systematizes the main stages of ratings evolving as a notion. Ratings are examined as a tool of informational transparency, including the notion of ratings as a special kind of expert examination, as well as special features of the rating activity and its patterns.
