Abstract

Early contraceptive advice is essential in women with heart disease and should be considered as an integral part of standard treatment in these women. When considering a contraceptive method, the efficacy, inherent risks and benefits are evaluated in relation to the particularities of the cardiac condition. For this, potential interactions with cardiovascular drugs, effects on coagulation and haemodynamics are of particular importance. By appropriate counselling, including the woman’s preference, personalised advice is given by a multidisciplinary team. In this chapter, we consider the different methods of contraception in relation to the type of heart disease.
