Abstract
Most of the Black Studies units that currently exist were established in the period from 1968 to 1972. Chapter 1 details the history of two such programs—one on a small, rural college campus and the other on a large, urban university campus—from the standpoint of the author. The influence of changing campus demographics and administrative structure is emphasized. Global political instability and the rise of identity politics serve to distinguish this period from previous eras and create the environment for the rise of a new field—Black Studies.
