Abstract
Over recent decades, the study of the telling of history has emphasized the relationship of narrative structure and history. Inspired by the work of Hayden White (1975), this literature demonstrates the diverse ways in which the past gets represented. In the Caribbean, Richard Price (1990, 1998) has explored cases of the same events producing very different historical narratives. David Scott has shown how the dominant narrative structures in the writing of Caribbean history have also shifted from an emphasis on romantic narratives to a recognition that tragic structures are more appropriate (2004).
