Abstract
The conventional microbial identification systems are based on utilization of carbon sources, enzymatic reactions, and pH changes resulting from utilization of substrates or detection of volatile or nonvolatile compounds. These tests/systems are classified as single enzyme rapid tests, overnight biochemical-based tests, and commercial microbial identification systems. A brief description including methodology, acceptable results, and precautions for each test/system is discussed.
