Abstract

Venous disease is the most prevalent vascular condition treated by physicians in Australia. Physicians from different specialities are involved in the care of these patients and this chapter aims to provide an overview on venous disease in the Australian community. The treatment of varicose veins has transformed from predominantly open surgery to currently endovenous ablation that can be performed in an outpatient setting. Progress is also made in the area of preventing post-phlebitic syndrome after deep venous thrombosis using pharmacomechanical thrombolysis. Treatment of deep venous obstruction in the iliac veins and inferior vena cava using stents is increasing. The recent advances in the field of newer oral anticoagulants are likely to further improve the treatment of deep venous thrombosis in the community.
