Abstract
This narrative involves a third example (along with Chaps. 11 and 12) of the self-management of bipolar illness, this time concerning a man in his 30s who was caught up in the demands of several systems at the same time: his family, the criminal justice system, health insurance, and the workplace, not to mention the varying intrusions of his illness itself, along with a second but often associated condition. Each of them intruded, sometimes in turn, and sometimes altogether. Treatment required addressing each of these when it emerged, while trying to keep it from diverting too much energy and attention from his overall goal of leading an independent life, both professionally and personally, even while remaining close to his family. What made this possible was his talent at his own craft, his determination, and his ability to focus.
