Abstract
Intensive care admissions comprise a small percentage of the obstetric population; however, it is becoming increasingly necessary to decrease maternal mortality in this group. Pregnancy is a unique stage in a woman’s life and has a significant impact on the mother’s physiology, making the management of these patients challenging and different from the nonpregnant population. In this chapter, we will discuss the impact of intensive care management in pregnant and postpartum patients as well as the physiologic changes and pathology unique to gravid patients.
