Abstract
A review of the existing international literature on politicization of state bureaucracies allows the researcher to differentiate between the different types of politicization that might usefully be drawn upon. Of particular relevance here are the Westminster-type politico-administrative systems of Australia, Great Britain and New Zealand. There have traditionally been three different approaches to understanding Ministerial/civil service interaction: the constitutional, rational choice and materialist approaches. However, in recent years, two new approaches have emerged—the Public Service Bargain framework and the Interpretive Approach.
