Abstract

Viral encephalitis has devastating impacts on patients, families, carers and health systems throughout the world. There are a great number of viral pathogens that cause infection of the central nervous system, and they do so in a range of different ways. In addition postinfectious causes, such as acute disseminated encephalomyelitis, are growing in importance. Prompt recognition of patients with suspected viral encephalitis is vital, as is a logical approach to investigation and clinical management. Enhanced neuro-intensive care and supportive treatment improves outcome. There is specific antiviral treatment for herpes virus encephalitis. For other viruses specific agents are lacking, although recent developments in antiviral and immunomodulatory therapies may point the way towards new treatments.
