Abstract

Chronic pruritus (CP) is a challenging, multifactorial disease requiring the knowledge of patient needs and treatment goals as promoted by Patient Reported Outcomes (PRO) Research to choose the appropriate therapeutic pathway and to lead to a high therapeutic benefit. The Patient Needs Questionnaire (PNQ) of the validated Patient Benefit Index (PBI-P) is validated for CP patients and enables to capture 27 therapeutic needs in form of treatment goals. First results suggest that CP patients could have even higher need levels than dermatological patients in general. The use of the PBI-P has to be promoted in clinical routine as well as in research to get more profound data on the therapeutic needs of CP patients. Besides, PRO research has to be further advanced with an establishment of a variety of instruments to measure therapeutic goals or patient preferences besides patient needs.
