Abstract

Increasingly in our globalizing world, people that have lived or grown up in different cultural contexts experience stress related to different cultural voices in their personal position repertoire. The primary objective of this paper is to present the PEACE methodology (Personal Emotional Account of Cultural Experience) that can be used to explore and develop personal positions through dialogue.

Building on the theory of the dialogical self, valuation theory and the Self Confrontation Method (Hermans HJM, Hermans-Jansen E, Self narratives: The construction of meaning in psychotherapy. Guilford Press, New York, 1995; Hermans HJM, Hermans-Konopka A, Dialogical self theory. Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, UK, 2010) the PEACE methodology (König JR, Moving experience: complexities of acculturation. VU University Press, Amsterdam, 2012) was developed to explore the personal cultural position repertoire on an emotional level and facilitate acculturation processes through dialogues between personal cultural positions.

A number of case studies will be presented showing how individuals that have grown up in different cultures emotionally value their personal cultural positions. This is explored by using repositioning statements, in-between and bird’s-eye-view statements as stepping-stones to developing a dialogical culture coaching approach.

In this way the complexities of personal cultural positions and their emotional connotations are conceptualised, explored and related to the subtle power of collective discourses in their broader sociological context.

This method enables the migrant to recognize different personal cultural voices and to discover what their relationships are to each other. This enhances the migrant’s ability to listen to these cultural voices and to voice them to become a cultural change agent. A sense of peace and connectedness between and within individuals is made possible through this approach.
