Abstract

Due to the high rate of mortality and morbidity of infective endocarditis, every effort should be made to reduce its incidence. Although its efficacy has not been demonstrated in humans, antibiotic prophylaxis had been recommended since 60 years for subjects with predisposing conditions undergoing at-risk procedures. This article discusses the pro and con of the ongoing IE prophylaxis strategies and the impact of the recent modifications on the disease incidence.
