Abstract
The goal of chest drain treatment is to the restore the physiological conditions in the pleural space.
At first glance this phrase may not impress much but it should always be the basis of all of considerations and efforts when dealing with a chest drain.
“Restoration of physiological conditions in the pleural space” means that we follow these conditions as we, for example, set a pressure in the drainage system (i.e. generating a subatmospheric pressure in the pleural space). It also means that we have to clarify when we have reached the criteria for chest tube removal. This is particularly true when monitoring chest drain output and fluid production.
