Abstract
Patients with a chest drain may suffer from severe nociceptive (irritation of nociceptors at the skin incision) and neuropathic (compression or injury of the intercostal nerve) pain. Severe pain during chest drain therapy significantly influences the well being of the patient and leads to severe pathophysiological disorders. Early mobilization, sufficient coughing to mobilize secretions, and effective deep breathing are only possible with adequate pain management. Insufficient mobilization and deep breathing may lead to pneumonia. Therefore effective pain management during chest drain therapy is essential in patients with a chest drain.
