Abstract
Algae species are considered the next generation hosts for the production of biopharmaceuticals (BFs) offering several attributes. In the present book specific groups of BFs produced in algae have been presented including antibodies, immunotoxins, cytokines, growth factors, and vaccines. In this chapter the case of some algae-made BFs that do not fall in these categories is analyzed, including the following: lactoferricin, neutrophil peptide-1, flounder growth hormone, erythropoietin, human growth hormone, soybean Kunitz trypsin inhibitor, and fibronectin domains. Except for erythropoietin as well as the fibronectin domain 10FN3 engineered at the chloroplast level, all the candidates have been successfully produced in algae and constitute attractive candidates for further evaluations, e.g. completing preclinical evaluation and initiating clinical trials.
