Abstract
As the discipline of advanced nursing practice matures attention on advanced clinical expertise remains the focus while additional core competencies such as leadership and research have become included when characterizing advanced practice nursing roles. Understanding research, the utilization of data and participation in the research process, especially as it provides evidence for effective practice, has become an integral component of educational programs and expected educational outcomes for an advanced practice nurse graduate. This chapter introduces research as a role competency for advanced nursing practice and discusses the essential nature of evidence-based practice. Examples of models and frameworks that support and encourage participation in research are provided. The chapter concludes with the profile of a university-based research center that educates, supports, and mentors advanced practice nurse participation in research.
