Abstract
Lesions in the hip joint are a bit different from lesions at other sites. No matter if the lesions are the result of direct trauma or indirectly developed, the local cartilage treatment alternatives are the same. Transarthroscopic approaches are preferred because of reduced morbidity and the treatment algorithms are generally the same as in other joints, simple bone marrow-based techniques for small defects, while more complex methods like allografting and autologous chondrocyte implantation (ACI) are preserved for larger defects. However, in the hip joints successful refixation of chondral flaps has been described, a technique not advised in other joints. To date, no large prospective cartilage repair series exists and no randomized studies addressing this have been performed. This chapter will give a summary of current techniques and outcomes of cartilage injury management of the hip joint.
