Open Surgical Management of Pincer Lesions in FAI

Diagnosis and Management of Femoroacetabular Impingement

Abstract

The careful evaluation of a young and active patient presenting with hip pain is delicate. One must possess the full understanding of the anatomy of the hip; adequately question the patients about the character, distribution, and presentation of the pain; and at the same time master the analysis of basic radiological examinations. Only then can one offer an honest attempt at diagnosing the condition. This chapter focuses the attention on the notion of pincer-type impingement. First, a clear definition of pincer-type impingement is offered, followed by the description of its typical clinical presentation, and finally an open surgical management strategy will be suggested. The ultimate goal of the surgical treatment must be individualized to address the level and the type of deformity; it must be tailored to the patient’s expectations as well as the surgeon’s preferred surgical approach.
