Abstract

Gamma-rays are another neutral probe which can penetrate easily. However, the \(\mathrm {\gamma }\)-ray energy of radioactive sources is not sufficient to break up a nucleus. Thus, only intense high-energy \(\mathrm {\gamma }\)-ray sources produced in nuclear reactions were used to discover new isotopes. These discoveries as well as the discovery of three isotopes produced by pion reactions are described in the chapter.
