Abstract
Adrenal insufficiency is a deficiency of glucocorticoid production, which can result from adrenal gland failure (primary adrenal insufficiency) or failure of hypothalamic–pituitary secretion (secondary adrenal insufficiency). This chapter reviews these clinical conditions in detail. In addition, diabetes insipidus, a disorder of fluid homeostasis resulting from inadequate vasopressin or antidiuretic hormone (ADH) secretion or action and SIADH are reviewed. Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) and hyperosmolar nonketotic coma (HNKC); hyperglycemic states in patients with diabetes mellitus characterized by ketosis, insulin deficiency, and relative excess of glucagon; and other counterregulatory hormones receive special attention in this chapter.
