Abstract

As trauma is the leading cause of death in persons aged 1–44 years and the fourth leading cause of death overall, this chapter covers the most important diagnostic and therapeutic issues on the subject. Sepsis, adult respiratory distress syndrome, and multiple organ failure, although covered in other chapters, are revised again. The importance of multisystem trauma and establishment of priorities, such as airway maintenance, breathing and ventilation, and circulation and shock management, are reviewed. Severity of injury scoring systems (Glasgow Coma Scale and trauma score), circulation and shock management, and classification of hemorrhagic shock are also reviewed.
