Critical Care Oncology

Abstract

Cancer is one of the leading causes of death in the United States. Enhanced critical care capabilities have contributed substantially to improved survival. Critical care may be needed on a short-term basis for the complications of the underlying malignancy or of aggressive antineoplastic therapy. This chapter covers the changes in the central nervous system in patients with cancer admitted to the ICU. It covers oncological emergencies such as spinal cord compression, electrolyte abnormalities, and tumor lysis syndrome. A comprehensive review of diagnostic modalities in these patients is also covered.
