Abstract
DING Gongchen (丁拱辰, 1800–1875), mechanical engineer, was one of the first people in China who systematically examined the application and the structure of Western firearms, and tried to study and produce firearms in China. He was also the first man in China constructing the models of steam engine, locomotive and steam boat, and wrote the first book on those machines and weapons. He has made great contributions to the development of mechanical engineering in the mid-19th century China.
