Congenital Heart Disease and Adolescence

Abstract

Adolescence is a developmental period often characterized by risk-taking behavior, changes in relationships, and burgeoning independence. These normal challenges for adolescents can be further complicated by a chronic illness, such as CHD. The aim of this chapter is to discuss several aspects of adolescent behavior pertinent to individuals with CHD, including risk behavior and sexuality. We will also explore the role of peer social integration on behavior and other psychosocial outcomes. Because adolescents with CHD are at greater risk for the repercussions that may come from normative experimental behavior, communication between parents and adolescents, as well as between the medical team and families, is vital. Effective communication is the vehicle by which adequate disease knowledge, proper self-care information, and healthy relationship development are accomplished. The current discussion calls for future research to investigate several critical topics in adolescent behavior that remain unknown and may direct interventional studies.
