The Role and Guidance of Parents of CHD Patients

Abstract

The presence of a chronic illness has an important impact on the well-being of the family. When it comes to the psychosocial aspects related to these conditions, there could be elements in common to all conditions; however, it is essential to specifically investigate factors associated with the well-being of families with congenital heart disease (CHD) patients. In this chapter, the literature pertaining to the well-being of the families of the adolescents (and children) with CHD will be explored. Particular focus will be given on types of parenting styles and how they affect the adolescent patients, the role of parental overprotection on parental well-being, and, finally, some practical indications on how to improve the handling of these families are provided.
