Abstract

Semantic technologies provide new ways for accessing data and acquiring knowledge. The underlying structures allow finding information easier, gathering meaning and associations of data entities and associating data to users’ knowledge. Even though the focus of research in this area is more to provide “machine readable” data, human-centered systems benefit from these technologies too. Especially graphical representations of semantically structured data play a key-role in this chapter. We will give a short overview over the idea of Semantic Web and its technologies. Thus semantic technologies are not in focus of this thesis, the review of the research will be performed in a higher level of abstraction. The goal is to give a common understanding of the term semantics as it is used in Semantic Web. Further an overview of the Semantic Web and the related technologies should give an impression of the way how data and meaning as formalized metadata is investigated. In this context, we will introduce some classifications on semantic formalisms to enable a view on the different levels of formalizing knowledge. The most common languages for describing semantics will be introduced based on the classifications. This allows depicting the continuous spectrum of light-weight to formal semantics. Further it will clarify that information visualization and semantic technologies are contradictory approaches for information acquisition. While semantics is more focusing on providing facts to specific and explicit questions or enhance the search experience, information visualization follows more an exploratory approach of information acquisition. For outlining this issue, models of exploratory search will be introduced in context of human interaction with semantics.
