Abstract
NGN Telecoms is a telecommunications company based in South Africa that was founded by Calum McCracken, an inveterate entrepreneur. The company has expanded in South Africa and globally, led by the “golden triangle” of McCracken as CEO and deputy chairman, Vuli Cuba, as chairman of the board, and Justin Webb as chief information officer. It has become a market leader in South African telephony value-added services, with a 95 % share in the South African market in 2014. The case situates McCracken in September 2014 as he considers making another attempt to enter the Kenyan market after an earlier, seven-year-long attempt that had ended in 2013 with NGN Telecoms’ withdrawal from Kenya. The question he is considering is how to enter the market and avoid the challenges that the company faced in the earlier attempt.
