Abstract
Taman’s mother, Anna, still played the viola da gamba – what an intoxicating sound it produced in her hands, he thought – and she had once been a formidable interpreter of Max Bruch and Brahms. Taman would frequently fall asleep as a child to his mother playing her rendition of Richard Strauss’s “Don Quixote” viola parts, as well as Edward Elgar’s “Enigma Variations.” He felt blessed to forever carry those hauntingly beautiful sounds within him.
