Abstract

There is a persistent and excessive daytime sleepiness experienced by people with major sleep disorders, causing severe sleep disturbance, seen particularly in obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome. Unrecognised as such by many sufferers, in their believing they sleep well, they remain perplexed as to why they are indeed so sleepy. It contrasts with the perceived poor sleep of those with insomnia but without daytime sleepiness. ‘Periodic limb movements in sleep’ and narcolepsy are other examples of the more severe sleep disorders that are described.
