Abstract
Both theoretical and practical knowledge in medicine was dominated for almost 2000 years by the work of the Greek physicians Hippokrates and Galenos, but their theories included several fallacies. This chapter deals with the origin and revision of several mistakes and fallacies, such as the origin of childbed fever, the usefulness of local anesthetics, the origin of gastric ulcers, and the origin of Crohn’s disease. Furthermore, the paradigm changes that have occurred in the understanding of homosexuality over the past 2500 years are described, with the final conclusion that homosexuality is not a sin, criminal act, nor disease, but a natural property of healthy animals and humans. Short biographies of Harvey, Semmelweis, Schleich, Marshall, and Warren are also included.
